Visas Overview
Only a valid passport is necessary for citizens of most countries.
Customs Overview
Customs people are obviously fussy about drugs - declare all medicines and leave any bongs, hookahs and roach clips at home. Biosecurity is another customs buzzword, with authorities serious about keeping out any diseases that may harm the country's significant agricultural industry. Tramping gear such as boots and tents will be checked and may need to be cleaned before being allowed in; ditto golf clubs and bicycles. You must declare any plant or animal products (including anything made of wood), and food of any kind. You'll also come in for extra scrutiny if you've arrived via Africa, Southeast Asia or South America. Weapons and firearms are either prohibited or require a permit and safety testing.
Duty Free
When entering New Zealand you can bring most articles in free of duty provided that Customs is satisfied they are for personal use and that you'll be taking them with you when you leave. There's also a duty-free quota per person of 1125mL of spirits or liqueur, 4.5L of wine or beer, 200 cigarettes (or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco) and dutiable goods up to the value of NZ$700.
